Located on the northwestern edge of Dundee, on land annexed by Dundee City Council from Angus for the purpose, Birkhill Cemetery lies immediately to the west of Templeton Woods, 4 miles (6.5 km) northwest of the city centre. Opened in 1989, this new site was necessitated by the lack of burial space in Dundee, with cemeteries such as Balgay reaching capacity.
Birkhill includes sections set aside for the burial of those of Islamic faith, children and cremated remains, together with an area of woodland burials created in 2000.
