Linn Water

(Cumnock Burn)

The Linn Water rises as headstreams on the northern slopes of Benbrack in East Ayrshire (principally the Penniquite Burn) and flows northwest through plantation forest before turning west southwest through Ashbeugh Glen. From this point the river is also referred to as the Cumnock Burn and it meanders on to Dalmellington, curving around the north of the village, where it is crossed first by Sillyhole Bridge and then by Buchan's Bridge. It then continues over Dalmellington Moss to fall into the Muck Water just a half-mile (1 km) before that river reaches the River Doon. Its total length is 5¼ miles (8.4 km).
