A sea loch of Argyll and Bute, Loch Fyne extends north from the Firth of Clyde and Kilbrannan Sound for just over 40 miles (64 km). It is fed from the north by the River Aray, the River Shira and the River Fyne which rises near the border with Stirling Council Area and flows 6 miles (10 km) southwards through Glen Fyne. The loch gave its name to the Royal Navy frigate HMS Loch Fyne launched in 1944 at Burntisland and is noted for its seafood which has given rise to a chain of Loch Fyne restaurants across the UK. The principal settlement on its shore is Inveraray which lies near its northern extremity.
