Bonkle

(Auchter Bridgend)
North Lanarkshire

The settlement of Bonkle is located 3 miles (5 km) northwest of Wishaw in North Lanarkshire Council Area. Originally the two separate settlements of Auchter Bridgend and Bonkle, the latter name now applies to the area from the Auchter Water to the historical settlement of Bonkle. The village is believed to date from 1775, when the first cottages are thought to have been built. There was a close association with the Stuarts of Allanton, many residents of the village working on the Allanton Estate, a country estate which extended to 810 ha (2000 acres).
