Melness Highland A locality comprising a group of crofting townships on the north coast of Sutherland, Melness lies to the west of Tongue Bay opposite Coldbackie. The individual settlements are Midtown, Skinnet, Talmine, Achinahuagh, Portvasgo, Strathan, Lubinvullin, Achininver and West Strathan. Settled by crofters moved from the township of Ribigill to the south of Tongue, many of its cottages are roofed with slate quarried at Talmine.
