Lossit

Argyll and Bute

A settlement on the Dunlossit Estate in the E of Islay (Argyll and Bute), Lossit is situated ¾ mile (1.2 km) southeast of Ballygrant and comprises Lossit Lodge, a farm and Loch Lossit. A distillery opened here following the Small Stills Act of 1816 and produced upwards of 55,000 litres (12,000 gallons) of spirit annually. It seems to have operated until the 1860s, making it the longest-surviving of Islay's 19th-century farm-scale distilleries.
