Delnabo

Moray

A settlement of Upper Strathavon in Moray, Delnabo lies at the junction of the Water of Ailnack with the River Avon, a mile (1.5 km) to the east of Tomintoul. In 1647 George Gordon, the 2nd Marquis of Huntly, a supporter of King Charles I (1630-85), was captured here by Cromwell's soldiers and over a year later, executed in Edinburgh. A corn mill operated here in the 18th Century and from 1850 to 1858 George Smith of Minmore took over Delnabo as the Cairngorm Distillery to supplement Glenlivet Distillery before its enlargement. The turreted Delnabo House dates from the 19th century.
