Kinnell is a parish, which lies in Angus Council Area, some 5 miles (8 km) south of Brechin and 7 miles (11 km) southwest of Montrose in Angus.
It is located in the old county of Forfarshire, which disappeared following the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1974.
The parish has an area of 28.1 sq. km (10.8 sq. miles). Kinnell has 8 neighbouring parishes; namely Aberlemno, Brechin, Craig, Farnell, Guthrie, Inverkeilor, Kirkden and Lunan. The boundaries of this parish were modified among significant changes recommended by the Boundary Commissioners after the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1889.
